We’ve Been Duped
We have it all wrong. Society has come a long way, but we still have so far to go. I think more people are starting to feel it and understand what we as humans just trying to get through the day can expect.
Society has tricked us into thinking we (or sometimes others) do not deserve decency. I bet it has seeped into your thinking, even if you are the most woke person. We need to reframe humans relationships with companies. Why do so many people have a reflexive response defend companies bottom lines when there is a discussion about raising minimum wages or taxes. I don’t think that EVERY person who gets defensive is a bad person. I think we have heard these things so many times from prominent places. It is very difficult to fend it off. But we need to push back, hard. Why can we not think of the people first. Social safety nets are so important and I am more pro than ever. People need to feel safe and stable regardless of their employment status. If your first response when you hear that is thinking of all the “lazy people taking advantage” maybe you need to stop for a second. Yes lots of people are lazy, but I would guess your estimate of low to middle class people taking advantage of systems is overblown. The boogeyman you have been told about at every turn. Even if every single person you think is lazy really is, I don’t care. We have seen jobs plummeting and unemployment grow due to all of these advancements in AI. Regardless of what you think of AI the goal should be to make peoples lives easier or more rewarding in one way or another. Anything else is unacceptable. If AI replaces jobs, and we don’t have enough jobs open to replace these people. That does not make those people lazy. Mission accomplished. Let people be free and enjoy their lives. We are sold this dream when you are a kid that you can find a job that is fulfilling. Not every job is fulfilling. Stop acting like it is. Jobs are mostly a means to and end. If you like your job, that is amazing and I am happy for you. Stop expecting it from everyone. It is the exception, not the rule. If we took a person first mindset, I think the mental health crisis we are in right now would be largly fixed. Instead of a person with a sick child losing their job and losing sleep over how they are going to pay for treatment, push the difficult decisions onto companies. A company cannot grieve. A company cannot experience joy. A company will not lose sleep over everything. If the minimum wage goes up, make the company figure it out. If a company makes more money, take taxes from them. I don’t understand why we need to make excuses for them. We created jobs to share responsibility of society to keep it running and society should keep us going when we need it. Life does not need to be picking up pennies in front of a steamroller. One trip up and you’re toast.
